Circumstances of loss

20.1.82 BUILT IN 1865 AT KELVINHAUGH, LANARK. COMPOSITE HULL CONSTRUCTION. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY JOHN JOSE, MELLINGAY, PERRANARWORTHALL, CORNWALL. PASSAGE SWANSEA FOR TOCAPILLA. DURING THE PASSAGE THE CARGO BEGAN TO HEAT UP AND COURSE WAS SHAPED FOR THE FALKLANDS ISLANDS, ARRIVING 20.1.82. AFTER ANCHORING IT WAS DECIDED TO SCUTTLE HER. FOLLOWING AN INITIAL ATTEMPT SHE WAS RUN INTO SPARROW COVE AND A PLANK TAKEN OUT. INITIALLY THIS WAS SUCCESSFUL, HOWEVER LATER THE FIRE INCREASED AND THE VESSEL BURNED DOWN TO THE WATERLINE. (BOARD OF TRADE WRECK REPORT DTD 1882).
