Circumstances of loss

10.9.68 VESSEL, BUILT 1953, WAS ON VOYAGE FROM ASSAB TO ROTTERDAM, FULLY LOADED WITH ETHIOPIAN NIGER SEED EXPELLERS IN BAGS, WHEN FIRE COMMENCED IN NO.4 HOLD 10.9.68. AFTER ENTERING THE PORT OF MOZAMBIQUE FIRE SPREAD TO REMAINING HOLDS CAUSING AN EXPLOSION IN NO.3 HOLD WHICH PROMPTED FURTHER EXPLOSIONS. THE BURNT-OUT HULK SUBSEQUENTLY CAPSIZED, ALMOST ENTIRELY SUBMERGED. THE VESSEL WAS ABANDONED AS A CTL. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY KALASHIPPING CO., S.A.. (MSD).
