Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1961 BY ONOMOICHI ZOSEN, ONOMICHI. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY PALMA ARNADORA SA. PASSAGE GEORGETOWN, SOUTH CAROLINA FOR PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD. HAD FIRE IN ENGINE ROOM AND HUGE FLAMES AND BLACK SMOKE FORCED THE CREW TO ABANDON SHIP. THE BLAZE WAS EVENTUALLY EXTINGUISHED BY A COAST GUARD CUTTER, BUT THE VESSEL SANK THE FOLLOWING DAY DUE TO VOLUME OF WATER ONBOARD. (MSD).
