VESSEL BUILT AS 'PORTREATH' IN 1907 BY J BLUMER OF SUNDERLAND FOR THE PORTFIELD SS CO. A '3 ISLAND VESSEL'. ENGINE BY J DICKINSON OF SUNDERLAND. BOUGHT BY THE CHARLTON SS CO OF NEWCASTLE IN 1916 AND RENAMED 'HURSTSIDE'. TORPEDOED AND LATER SUNK BY GUNFIRE BY GERMAN SUBMARINE UC-54 WHILE ON PASSAGE BARRY TO ARCHANGEL. CARGO 5250 TONS OF COAL, 12 BAGS OF MAIL, INC 2 SECRET BAGS, AND DECK CARGO OF 4 TRACK LAYING TRACTORS. CREW ABANDONED INTO TWO BOATS, CAPTAIN HOWE AND 11 MEN IN ONE AND 12 MEN IN THE OTHER. LATER RECOVERED BY THE S TRAWLER 'OWL'.
