Circumstances of loss
BUILT OF TEAK IN 1805 AS A STORES SHIP FOR THE EAST INDIA COMPANY. NAMED AS SIR EDWARD HUGES. PRESENTED TO THE ADMIRALTY IN 1806 AND RENAMED 'TORTOISE'. SERVED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN IN 1813, GIBRALTAR IN 183 AND ST HELENA IN 1817. BETWEEN 1802 AND 1838 WAS BACK IN ENGLISH WATERS, FIRST AT PLYMOUTH AND THEN A MILFORD WHERE SHE BECAME A COAL HULK. FROM 1845 SERVED AS STORES SHIP AT ASCENTION UNTIL BROKEN UP IN 1859. (G J LOCKETT).
