Surveying Details H2752/58 5.7.78 REPD TO LIE ACROSS S ENTRANCE TO THE CHANNEL BETWEEN ST PAULS ISLAND & MAINLAND. THE WK IS 2MTRS WIDE (BEAM) & COMPLETELY FLATTENED, EXCEPT FOR FRONT OF BRIDGE, WHICH IS UPRIGHT. LEAST DEPTH OVER BRIDGE 4MTRS. MAX DEPTH ON WK SITE 10MTRS. (DNS SANDERSON LETTER, DTD 15.6.78). NCA. H2572 20.6.80 STATED TO BE MINESWEEPER,, PROBABLY SUNK BY DIVE BOMBERS, & LATER DISPERSED BY NAVY. ALARM GONG [DTD 1912] TAKEN FROM WK. A WRECKED LANDING CRAFT LIES CLOSE ON THE LANDWARD SIDE OF MAIN WK. IN 30-35FT OF WATER. BOW SECTION 9FT HIGH. NO HAZARD TO SHIPPING. (D ROBSON, BSAC SOUTHSEA, TELECON). 7.7.80 NOW THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN AN ALGERINE CLASS MINESWEEPER DESTROYED BY ENEMY ACTION. RAISED JAN 1943 & SUNK ACROSS CHANNEL TO ACT AS BLOCKSHIP TO COMBAT ITALIAN ONE MAN SUBS. (D ROBSON, TELECON 4.7.80). 12.1.82 HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS REMAINS OF HMS KINGSTON. AFTER WAR, WHEN USED AS BLOCKSHIP WAS CUT DOWN BY NAVAL SALVAGE TEAM TO IMPROVE DEPTHS IN CHANNEL. FURTHER SALVAGE WORK IS CURRENTLY BEING CARRIED OUT. (D ROBSON, TELECON 12.1.83).
