26.7.1899 EX-ROYAL WILLIAM. BUILT IN 1833 OF WOOD AT PEMBROKE DOCK, PEMBROKE. ORIGINALLY A 1ST RATE MAN OF WAR OF 120 GUNS, BUT UDOCKED AS A SCREW VESSEL OF 72 GUNS. RENAMED CLARENCE IN 1885 AND CONVERTED TO ATRAIING/REFORMATORY SHIP. TOOK FIRE ABOUT 1 AM ON 26.7.1899. FIRE BURNT THROUGH SIDES OF SHIP AND SHE BROKE IN TWO BETWEEN MAIN AND MIZZENMASTS AT 5.55 AM AND SANK AT HER MOORINGS. (SRN & SIBI).
