Simplified Wreck Survey
Underwater wreck survey details for HMS Campania (part of) located in the Firth of Forth at coordinates 56 2.312 N, 3 13.502 W. Originally identified as a significant wreck site that had broken into three major sections, historical survey data noted Part A as the most extensive area of wreckage with the least water depth. Initial sounding reports indicated depths ranging from 41ft to 45ft over the wreckage with a seabed composed of mud. Following salvage operations by Metrec Engineering Ltd in 1968, subsequent hydrographic searches conducted by the Forth Ports Authority in 1977 and 1986 failed to locate the wreckage using echo sounders and transit sonar. Consequently, the wreck site is now officially classified as dead and removed from active navigational charts.

Circumstances of loss
27.11.1914 BUILT IN 1893 BY FAIRFIELD CO LTD, GLASGOW FOR THE CUNARD SS CO. BOUGHT BY ADMIRALTY IN 27.11.1914 AND WORK TO CONVERT INTO AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER COMMENCED, BEING COMPLETED WHEN SHE WAS COMMISSIONED AS HMS CAMPANIA. SANK AFTER DRAGGING ANCHOR IN A SQUALL AND COLLIDING PORT SIDE ACROSS STERN OF HMS ROYAL OAK. THERE WAS A BOILER EXPLOSION BEFORE SHE SANK. HMS GLORIOUS, NEARBY, WAS DAMAGED. ALL CREW SAVED.
