Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1919 AS A LIGHT CRUISER, SHE WAS CONVERTED IN 1939. VESSEL TOOK PART IN OPERATION `PEDESTAL', ESCORTING A CONVOY TO MALTA. WHEN THE SHIPS WERE HEAVILY ATTACKED BY A COMBINED AIR AND SEA FORCE, SHE WAS HIT BY ITALIAN SUBMARINE 'AXUM' TORPEDO. HER RUDDERS & PROPELLERS WERE DAMAGED, CAUSING HER TO BECOME UNMANAGEABLE. UNABLE TO BE TAKEN IN TOW, SHE WAS ABANDONDED & SUNK BY SHIPS IN COMPANY. 24 CREW WERE LOST. (DODS & AXIS SUBMARINE SUCCESSES).
