WAS ESCORTING HMS GLORIOUS ([55301) QV) WHEN GLORIOUS WAS CAUGHT UNAWARE AND OVERWHELMED BY THE GERMAN BATTLECRUISERS SCHARNHORST AND GNEISENAU. HMS ARDENT AND HMS ACASTA VALIANTLY DEFENDED BUT GLORIOUS WAS SUNK. HMS ACASTA BRAVELY CONTINUED THE ACTION AFTER THE ARDENT WAS SUNK AND MANAGED TO TORPEDO THE SCHARNHORST ABREAST HER REAR TURRET CAUSING SERIOUS DAMAGE BEFORE SHE TOO WAS SUNK. 1 FROM ACASTA, 2 FROM THE ARDENT AND 43 FROM THE GLORIOUS WERE SAVED BY A NORWEGIAN VESSEL OUT OF A TOTAL COMPLEMENT OF APPROX 1500 ON THE 3 SHIPS.
