Simplified Wreck Survey
The Girona shipwreck is a significant historical underwater site located off the coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The official wreck position is recorded at coordinates 55 14.85 N, 06 30.108 W. Originally discovered in 1966 by Belgian diver Robert Stenuit, the site underwent extensive excavation between 1966 and 1968, resulting in the recovery of a large quantity of artifacts now housed in the Ulster Museum. The known extent of the wreck site is contained within a 300-meter radius of position 55 14.51 N, 06 30.03 W. Due to its historical importance, this location is designated as a restricted area under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, specifically per Statutory Instrument 976/93. While subsequent survey attempts in 2009 using magnetometer and multibeam sonar equipment did not relocate structural remains, the site remains a protected maritime heritage zone. It is believed that additional artifacts remain embedded in the seabed within the protected radius.
