Simplified Wreck Survey
The Demerara Outer Ground Tackle Light obstruction is a historical navigational hazard located off the coast of Guyana near the Demerara River entrance. Positioned at coordinates 6 56.933 N, 58 3.4 W, the obstruction originated from the 1974 demolition of the Demerara Outer Light structure after a vessel collision. Throughout the late 20th century, the site was marked by various navigational aids, including orange can buoys and later a red and white safe water pillar buoy to warn mariners of the underwater wreckage. While historically identified as a dangerous underwater obstruction to navigation, modern hydrographic surveys conducted in 2017 and 2018 by IIC Technologies using multibeam (M/B) datasets reported nothing seen at the site. Consequently, the wreck status for the Demerara Outer Light obstruction has been amended to dead, indicating that no significant structural remains currently pose a danger to vessels in these waters.
