Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck identified as the Cotton Trader is located off the coast of Ras al Madraka, Oman, at coordinates 19 2.3 N, 57 48.81 E. Historical hydrographic survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office provide a complex timeline for this site. The vessel was initially reported aground in the vicinity of Ras al Madraka in 1983. Subsequent reports from 1984 identified the remains of a burnt-out coaster, later associated with the MV Ibn Buttutah, situated on the beach on the northern side of the Ras al Madraka headland. By 1994, the obstruction was noted at coordinates 19 02.18 N, 57 48.48 E, appearing in drying depths along the coastline. Following a formal data re-assessment in 2003, it was determined that the vessel was successfully salvaged, towed away, and scrapped in 1985. Consequently, the wreck site is classified as lifted and no longer represents a navigational hazard or submerged obstruction at this location.

15.8.83 BUILT IN 1963 BY LITHGOWS LTD, PORT GLASGOW. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY CHILTON NAVIGATION LTD. PASSAGE DUBAI FOR ADEN. SUFERED AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE IN NO 4 HOLD. BLAZING VESSEL ABANDONED AFTER RUNNING AGROUND. REFLOATED AND TOWED TO FUJAIRAH ANCHORAGE ON 15.8.83. LATER TOWED TO ADEN AND THEN TO DJIBOUTI WHERE THE VESSEL WAS DELARED A TOTAL LOSS. SOLD TO PAKISTANI SHIPBREAKERS AND TOWED TO GADANI BEACH TO BE SCRAPPED IN MAY 1985. (MSD).
