Simplified Wreck Survey

The wreck of the vessel CHATON is located on the French Basque Coast near the town of Hendaye and Socoa at coordinates 43 23 N, 1 44 W. Following a maritime casualty on November 23, 1977, the vessel was driven ashore on the Franco-Spanish border. Subsequent reports confirmed the ship sank at Socoa, situated between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. By January 1978, the wreck was reported as having broken into two pieces, lying aground with the engine room flooded at Haicabia, Urrugne. The structure is situated high upon the rocks, reaching a position where it is only accessible during high water, resulting in the wreck becoming well broken due to its location and state of decay. The final recorded position for the wreckage is 43 23 N, 1 44 W.
