Simplified Wreck Survey
The War Monarch is an underwater shipwreck located at coordinates 50 46.536 N, 0 46.901 E. Sunk during World War I, historical surveys noted its position 8 miles west-southwest of Dungeness and 11 miles east of the Royal Sovereign light vessel. Early reports swept the site clear to 60 feet in 1941, but subsequent hydrographic surveys by HMS Beagle in 1975 and HMS Enterprise in 1976 failed to locate the wreck, noting it does not exist as charted. Modern multibeam sonar data from 2016 also did not find the wreck, leading authorities to classify the site as dead with no further archaeological remains found.
