The shipwreck Ta Yao is located off the western coast of Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait. Historical hydrographic data tracks the status of this dangerous underwater obstruction since 1981. Initial reports identified the vessel as a sunken wreck of approximately 115 GRT. Multiple hydrographic surveys and navigation notices have recorded shifting coordinates for the wreckage, including positions at 23 53 N, 120 03 E and 23 52 30 N, 120 02 35 E. Following a search by insurers in November 1981, the vessel was not found at its primary location, though it was noted to have sunk with 400 feet of towing cable attached. The wreck is classified as a dangerous underwater obstruction to navigation and has been historically charted on various nautical charts in the region. Marine operators should be aware of the potential presence of this submerged hazard when transiting these waters.
