Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck of the vessel Sumatra is located at coordinates 22 25.16 N, 88 8.588 E in the Bay of India near the Hooghly River approach. Historical hydrographic surveys from the UK Hydrographic Office document the evolution of this underwater obstruction. Originally reported in 1949 as a sounding, the site was later designated as a wreck lying at a depth of 2 fathoms 4 feet in 1959, initially marked by a green conical light buoy. Subsequent surveys updated the depth to 4.6 meters and noted shifts in position and buoyage, including green conical light buoys and later a west cardinal pillar light buoy flashing every 7 seconds positioned close to the northwest.
