Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1881 BY THE LONDON & GLASGOW CO, GLASGOW. TWO BOILERS, COMPOUND INVERTED ENGINE OF 90HP, SINGLE SHAFT. PASSAGE SWANSEA FOR NANTES. SHIPPED SEVERAL HEAVY SEAS IN NW FORCE 10 CONDITIONS. TARPAULINS COVERING THE AFTER HATCH WERE WASHED AWAY. VESSEL SETTLED, ONE BOAT GOT READY AND SOME CREW GOT AWAY. VESSEL SUDDENLY FOUNDERED AND THE REMAINING 10 MEN WERE LOST. AT THE BOT ENQUIRY IT WAS FOUND THAT THE SHIP WAS TOO DEEPLY LADEN, ESPECIALLY IN THE STERN SECTION. MANAGING OWNER BLAMED FOR RAISING THE LOAD LINE, SUCH THAT IF FULLY LADEN THE VESSEL WOULD HAVE HAD ONLY 18 INCHES OF FREEBOARD. CONTROL OF CARGO STOWAGE HAD ALSO BEEN TAKEN OUT OF THE MASTER'S HANDS.
