Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1889 BY HARLAND & WOLFF. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY W JOHNSTONE & CO. THREE BOILERS, COMPOUND EXPANSION ENGINE, SINGLE SHAFT. PASSAGE BALTIMORE FOR LIVERPOOL. CARGO INCOUDED 900 CATTLE, 2000 BALES OF COTTON, 850 TONS COPPER ORE, 10000 TONS WHEAT. COTTON CARGO IGNITED SPONTANIOUSLY AND FIRE RAGED IN ONE HOLD. AFTER THREE DAYS OF FIGHTING THE FIRE THE MASTER DECIDED TO RUN HER ASHORE IN A SANDY COVE AND FLOOD THE HOLD. STRUCK THE BULLIG ROCK AND SANK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BAY. (SII, DODS, SHIPWRECKS OF THE IRISH COAST).
