Circumstances of loss

26.8.72 VESSEL, BUILT 1964 BY ISIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA HEAVY INDUSTRIES, WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING 26.8.72 WHILE AT PORT OF DONGES, R LOIRE. VESSEL WAS IN BALLAST CONDITION, BUT NOT GAS FREE, HAVING FINISHED UNLOADING A CARGO OF CRUDE OIL. FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS BROKE HER IN TWO AMIDSHIPS AND SHE SANK. SHE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY RAISED IN SECTIONS. THE BRIDGE AND ENGINE ROOM SECTIONS WERE DUMPED AT SEA IN OCTOBER 1973. DURING FEBRUARY 1974 THE FOREPART WAS REFLOATED, TOWED OUT OF THE CHANNEL & BEACHED. OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY JOHN S LATSIS. (MSD).
