Simplified Wreck Survey

Underwater Wreck Site Near Orfordness Suffolk Coordinates 52 4.529 N 1 37.909 E Historical hydrographic survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office detail an offshore marine obstruction and shipwreck site located in the North Sea off the coast of Suffolk near Orfordness and the Shipwash area. Initially discovered and surveyed by Royal Navy vessels including HMS Echo and HMS Bulldog, the site was historically designated as a wreck with varying depth measurements recorded over the decades, including a least depth of 9.8 meters and later 7.9 meters situated within shifting sandwaves. Magnetometer surveys identified ferrous material associated with the position, though subsequent multibeam and magnetometer surveys conducted by East Anglia Offshore Wind and Gardeline in 2012 and 2016 failed to locate the structure, noting the presence of dynamic sandwaves and classifying the site status accordingly.

H4139/76 5.1.77 WK LOCATED OUSIDE HI AREA DURING MAIN SONAR SEARCH. CLOSE SOUNDED 8.8.76 BY HMS BULLDOG AND CLASSIFIED AS 'BOTTOM'. REINVESTIGATED BY HMS BEAGLE 9.76 USING MAGNETOMETER AND CLASSIFIED AS FERROUS MATERIAL. CONSIDERED A WK WITHIN SANDWAVE. POSN 520430N, 013801E [OGB] USING HIFIX/6 [2 LOP]. LEAST E/S DEPTH 7.9MTRS. (HMS BULLDOG & HMS BEAGLE, HI 75/76). AMEND TO WK 7.9MTRS. BR STD. H2917/83 28.3.85 RIDGE DETECTED ON E/S BUT NOT BY DCS3. CONSIDER MAGNETOMETER CONTACT MADE IN 1976 STILL BURIED.
