Simplified Wreck Survey

SS Newent is an upright and largely intact historic shipwreck located in the English Channel at coordinates 50 40.982 N, 0 15.577 E. Sunk with an approximate displacement of 1000 tons, the site features structural remains including one boiler and a compound expansion engine, which positively identified the vessel via the engine maker's plate. Sitting in a general seabed depth of nearly 32 meters, the wreck rises with a height of 5 meters off the bottom and measures 70 meters in length and 15 meters in width, accompanied by a notable 95-meter scour trail. The least depth over the wreck is 26.97 meters, making it a significant underwater obstruction and dive site.

12.2.09 BUILT IN 1882 BY SHORT BROS, SUNDERLAND. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY JAMES DICKINSON & CO. ONE BOILER, COMPOUND EXPANSION ENGINE, SINGLE SHAFT. MACHINERY BY J DICKINSON & CO, SUNDERLAND. PASSAGE SOUTHAMPTON FOR BLYTHE. SAILED 12.2.09 AND WAS LAST SEEN OFF THE OWERS THAT NIGHT. POSTED MISSING AFTER OT ARRIVING IN BLYTHE. CONCLUDED BY LLOYDS THAT SHE SANK FOLLOWING COLLISION WITH NORWEGIAN BARQUE INGA, WHICH REPORTED A SERIOUSLY DAMAGED BOW AFTER COLLIDING WITH AN UNKNOWN SS. (DIVER MAGAZINE).
