The underwater wreck of the Markgraf is located off the coast of Mombasa at coordinates 5 3.53 S, 39 5.84 E. Originally documented as a steel vessel sunk around 1922, historical survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office note that the site has significantly deteriorated over time. By 2003, local reports confirmed that the vessel has now broken up into a well broken structural remain. Modern hydrographic surveys classify the site as a dangerous wreck with a depth of 0.9 meters, historically marked by a green can buoy near the front leading beacon.

19.8.1915 EX- MARK, BUILT 1893 BY WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, MITCHELL & CO., NEWCASTLE, WITH SINGLE TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 2,200IHP. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY DEUTSCHE OST AFRIKA LINIE, EMPLOYED ON ZANIBAR TO BOMBAY RUN. VESSEL WAS LAID UP AT TANGA. CAUGHT FIRE & CAPSIZED AFTER GUNFIRE FROM HMS SEVERN ON 19.8.1915. SALVAGE OPS BY ITALIAN SALVAGE COMPANY MAWA HANDELS ANSTALT TOOK PLACE IN MID 1950S. (SHIPWRECKS & SALVAGE ON THE E AFRICAN COAST, KEVIN PATIENCE)
