Circumstances of loss

9.10.71 BUILT IN 1956 BY FURNESS SHIPBUILDING CO LTD. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY LONDON & OVERSEAS FREIGHTERS, LTD. ON PASSAGE FROM NOVOROSSISK TO GENOA. DRAGGED HER ANCHOR IN A FIERCE GALE WHILE ANCHORED OFF GENOA, THEN STRUCK A BREAKWATER AND SANK. THE STERN SECTION WAS RAISED ON 9.10.71, AND TOWED OUT TO DEEP WATER. 5 DAYS LATER, IT WAS SUNK 90M FROM GENOA, BETWEEN THE ITALIAN MAINLAND & CORSICA. THE FORE SECTION WAS EVENTUALLY BROKEN UP WHERE IT LAY. 20 LIVES LOST. DECLARED A CONSTRUCTIVE TOTAL LOSS. (MSD).
