Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1897 BY AKT GES VULKAN. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD. TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 30000 IHP FOR 22.5KTS. SIX 10.5CM GUNS. AFTER 3 WEEKS OF COMMERCE BLOCKADING, SHE WAS SURPRISED WHILE COALING OFF RIO DE ORO BY THE LIGHT CRUISER 'HIGHFLYER' 5600 TONS, 11 X 6 INCH GUNS). AFTER A DEMAND TO SURRENDER WAS REFUSED SHE WAS SUNK IN SHALLOW WATER. THE SURVIVORS PUT ASHORE IN BOATS. THE CASUALTIES WERE HIGH ON THE GERMAN SIDE, BUT ONLY 1 ON THE BRITISH. (DODS).
