BUILT IN 1913 BY R DUNCAN & CO., WITH TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 475NHP. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY BABA SHOJI K K, UNDER COMMAND OF THE JAPANESE ARMY. PASSAGE TANDJUNG PRIOK FOR PADANG. FITTED WITH EXTRA DECKS CONSTRUCTED OF BAMBOO, SUBDIVIDED INTO CAGES OF THE SAME MATERIAL. TORPEDOED AND SUNK BY HM SUBMARINE 'TRADEWIND' OFF INDRAPURA, SUMATERA. ON BOARD WERE 4,860 JAVANESE WORKERS AND OVER 2000 PRISONERS OF WAR; 1377 DUTCH, 64 BRITISH AND AUSTRALIAN AND 8 AMERICAN. 5620 LOST. 723 SURVIVORS RESCUED, ONLY TO BE PUT TO WORK IN DEADLY CONDITIONS. (DODS, SEA BREEZES AUG. 1983, AMERICAN SUBMARINE SUCCESSES WWII & WILKIPEIDIA).
