Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater wreck known as J.A.P. is situated off the coast of Norfolk, England, near the Smiths Knoll light vessel location. The wreck coordinates are 52 42.343 N, 2 17.885 E. Historically identified in hydrographic surveys, the site has a complex discovery and assessment record. Initial 1967 surveys failed to locate the vessel, suggesting it may have been dispersed by tidal currents or buried within the seabed. Subsequent surveys in 1969 identified a possible wreck echo in the vicinity. A 1971 survey successfully located an underwater obstruction, recording a least echo sounder depth of 40.1 meters in a general depth of 42 meters, with signs of seabed scour reaching 43.2 meters. A second 1971 survey in the immediate area described a very small vessel lying in an east-to-west orientation on a flat bottom. Modern multibeam datasets from 1994 and 2017 have failed to locate the obstruction, leading to its classification as non-existent or dead. This site is currently recognized as an underwater obstruction with no significant structural presence detected in recent surveys.
