Circumstances of loss

16.2.46 VESSEL, BELIEVED TO BE U-219 WHICH WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE JAPANESE AS I.505 IN MAY 1945, WAS APPARENTLY SCUTTLED OFF SUNDRA STRAIT IN VERY DEEP WATER BY ALLIED FORCES AFTER THE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES. THIS IS AT VARIANCE WITH DOCUMENTED INFORMATION THAT SUGGESTS I.505 [U-219] SURRENDERED AT DJAKARTA IN AUGUST 1945 & WAS LATER BROKEN UP IN 1948. (CINC E INDIA STATION MESSAGE DTD 16.2.46; DIE DEUTSCHEN KRIEGSSCHIFFE 1815-1945 VOL.3).
