Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck of the Hylas (possibly) is located underwater approximately 10 miles east of the Butt of Lewis in the waters off the northwest coast of Scotland. Its official position coordinates are 58 38.857 N, 5 46.773 W. Sunk during World War I, historical records indicate the vessel has a recorded length of 200 feet and a height of 18 feet. Modern marine surveys conducted in June 1983 by Gardline Surveys relocated the sizeable shipwreck, confirming it measures approximately 140 by 30 meters. The wreck stands 9.5 meters high off the seabed in a general water depth of 120 meters, with a least echo sounder depth of 110 meters. The remains are oriented along a 120/300 degree axis on the sea floor.
