The wreck of HMS Rawalpindi is located in the Norwegian Sea at coordinates 63 39.5 N, 11 19 W. This underwater obstruction was identified by the fishing vessel Kingston Sapphire in 1969. The site is situated at a depth of approximately 168 fathoms, with the wreckage standing 16 fathoms above the seabed. Based on its significant size and proximity to the vessel's last known position of 63 40.0 N, 11 29.0 W, the underwater wreck is believed to be the remains of the British armed merchant cruiser HMS Rawalpindi. The site is officially recorded as a wreck at 152 fathoms depth.

BELIEVED TO BE THAT OF THE RAWALPINDI BECAUSE OF SIZE & LAST KNOWN POSN OF SHIP (634000N, 112900W). REPD TO LIE IN 168 FMS & STAND 16 FMS ABOVE SEABED. (KINGSTON SAPPHIRE, HN). RECORD AS WK 152FMS. TOO DEEP TO CHART. NCA.
Circumstances of loss
BUILT IN 1925 BY HAWTHORN LESLIE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY THE PENINSULAR & ORIENT STEAM NAVIGATION CO. QUADRUPLE EXPANSION ENGINES FOR 17 KNOTS. EIGHT 6 INCH GUNS. INTERCEPTED AND SUNK BY SCHARHORST AND GNEISENAU (11 INCH GUNS), THE ACTION LASTING 40 MIMUTES. 37 MEN RECOVERED BY GERMAN SHIPS, 265 MEN LOST. WAS THE FIRST REQUISTIONED ARMED MERCHANT CRUISER LOST DURING WW2. (WW2SL & DODS).
