Circumstances of loss

BUILT BY MAATS FYNEORRD. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT. TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINES OF 233 NHP. FORMERLY THE DUTCH VESSEL 'VAN WAERWIJCK' WHICH WAS SEIZED BY THE JAPANESE. WAS TORPEDOED BY HMS TRUCULENT WHILST TRANSPORTING ALLIED PRISONERS OF WAR. A TOTAL OF 170 WERE LOST FROM 117 DUTCH AND DUTCH EAST-INDIES, 40 BRITISH, 12 AUSTRALIAN AND 1 NORWEGIAN PRISONERS.
