The shipwreck of the GRETASTON is located at coordinates 45 25.941 N, 1 37.081 W in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of France. Historical hydrographic survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office and French maritime charts document the position and status of this underwater obstruction over time. Initially reported as a non-dangerous wreck of dangerous depth with its exact position doubtful, the site was later incorporated into French wreck records and nautical charts. Surveys updated the wreck's classification to a submerged wreck of dangerous depth lying at a depth of 28 meters.

Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, BUILT 1901 BY W GRAY & CO, WAS SUNK BY GERMAN MINELAYER 'UC 72'. THE CAPT & 28 OF THE CREW WERE KILLED. OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY W S MILLER & CO. (DODS). SUNK WHILE ON PASSAGE FROM HUELVA TO GARSTON. (LL WW1).
