The vessel was reported sinking on January 17, 2001, after the crew abandoned ship into liferafts and was subsequently sighted by aircraft. The FATIMA is presumed to have sunk at this location, though current hydrographic surveys confirm the site is too deep to chart as a maritime obstruction.
