Circumstances of loss
BUILT IN 1906 BY ALEXANDER STEPHENS & SONS, DUNDEE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ELDER DEMPSTER COMPANY. FOUR BOILERS, TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 424 NHP, SINGLE SHAFT. PASSAGE LIVERPOOL FOR SIERRA LEONE WITH GENERAL CARGO OF VALUE �50,000. SIGHTED SUBMARINE FLYING WHITE ENSIGN BUT THEY CLOSED THIS WAS SUBSTITUTED BY GERMAN NAVAL ENSIGN. STOPPED AND COMMENCED ABANDONING SHIP ON ORDERS FROM U-28, WHICH THEN TORPEDOED HER AT RANGE OF 150YDS. WAS AFLOAT FOR BARELY 10 MINUTES AFTER EXPLOSION. 104 LIVES LOST. (DODS, WW1SL, LLWW1).
