AND OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY MINISTRY OF WAR TRANSPORT (BLUE STAR LINE), WAS TORPEDOED AND SUNK BY GERMAN SUBMARINE U 772 WHILE IN CONVOY TBC1 ON PASSAGE SOUTHAMPTON TO LE HAVRE. WAS CARRYING 1448 AMERICAN SERVICEMEN. 8 LIVES LOST. (WW2SL, LL WW2 & DODS). 28.9.99 28.9.99 RE-ASSESSMENT OF LOSS. VESSEL NOW THOUGHT TO HAVE HIT A MINE AND THEN EXPERIENCED AN INTERNAL EXPLOSION. (NAVAL HISTORICAL BRANCH).
