Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater shipwreck of the ELMAREN is located on the outer reef of Egmont Island within the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, situated at approximate coordinates 6 40 S, 71 23 E (06°40.00'S, 71°23.00'E). Hydrographic survey records from a 1972 Joint Services Expedition detail that the vessel appears to have struck the barrier reef head-on with both anchors secured. Identification of the wreck was verified on site through the discovery of a ship's bell inscribed with the name ELMAREN. Initial maritime surveys noted the vessel was believed to date from around 1920, with physical inspections indicating it had rested on the reef for roughly 20 to 30 years. Updated navigational chart plotting places this historic underwater wreck and maritime obstruction along the rugged reef coastline of Egmont Atoll in the central Indian Ocean.
