Circumstances of loss

SANK FOLLOWING A COLLISION OFF LAMLASH. VESSEL, MCCONNEL & LAIRD SS, BUILT 1857 BY DENNY BROS., DUMBARTON WITH 2 CYLINDER COMPOUND ENGINE, SINGLE SHAFT, 1 BOILER. ON PASSAGE TO LONDONDERRY. COLLIDED WITH SV 'PLADDA', WHICH HAD JUST RELEASED TOW FROM TUG 'RECKLESS' BUT WAS NOT YET FULLY UNDER CONTROL AS SAILS HAD NOT BEEN SET. THE TWO VESSELS LOCKED TOGETHER, WHICH ENABLED ALL BUT 11 OF THOSE ON BOARD TO REACH SAFETY ON THE 'PLADDA'. REPORTED THAT COLLISION TOOK PLACE 1M E OF LAMLASH, BUT ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE OCCURRED OFF WHITING BAY. (CLYDE SHIPWRECKS).
