Circumstances of loss
BUILT IN 1960 BY KOCKUMS M/V A/B, MALMO. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY CAMPANULA SHIPPING CO LTD. PASSAGE FROM MARGHERA FOR NAPLES. THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION IN THE FOREPART, FOLLOWED BY A FIRE. LYING 29M OFF CROTONE, SHE WAS ESCORTED TO THE PORT FOR DAMAGE ASSESSMENT & DECLARED A CONSTRUCTIVE TOTAL LOSS. SHE WAS SOLD TO AN ITALIAN SHIPBREAKERS, WHO COMMENCED TOWING TO LA SPEZIA FOR SCRAPPING. HOWEVER, THE VESSEL BROKE IN TWO DURING GALE FORCE WINDS AND HEAVY SEAS ON DEC 25TH. THE STERN CONTINUED ITS JOURNEY TO LA SPEZIA. THE FORARD SECTION DRIFTED FOR SEVERAL DAYS, UNTIL IT WAS SUNK BY THE ITALIAN NAVY OFF TINO ISLAND. ALL CREW SAFE. (MSD).
