Simplified Wreck Survey

Underwater obstruction report for a large wire hawser located in the North Sea at coordinates 54 28.33 N, 3 50.978 E. This seabed hazard, identified during telephone cable installation, consists of a significant wire hawser lying in a North/South orientation that poses a serious snagging risk to towed fishing nets and marine equipment. Following the initial discovery, remedial works were completed in February 1999 involving rock dumping to bury the vulnerable cable infrastructure between 54 28.327 N, 03 50.998 E and 54 28.334 N, 03 50.948 E. Mariners and commercial fishermen should treat this location as a permanent foul ground due to the potential for submerged wire debris and rocky seabed obstructions in this sector of the North Sea.

HH160/300/04 2.2.99 LARGE WIRE HAWSER LOCATED IN 5428.50N, 0351.00E, DURING LAYING OF A TELEPHONE CABLE. HAWSER APPEARS TO BE LYING N/S AND CAUSED TOWED PLOUGH CABLE TO BREAK, EXPOSING TELEPHONE CABLE FOR APPROX 500MTRS EITHER SIDE OF POSN. HAWSER PROBABLY EXTENDS A GREATER DISTANCE AWAY FROM POSN AND MAY CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO TOWED NETS. (KINGFISHER NOTICE TO FISHERMEN DTD 17.12.98 & P CHEW/P SYMONS, CABLE AND WIRELESS, TELECON 28.1.99). KINGFISHER NOTICE GAVE LONGITUDE AS 1E CORRECTED TO 3E AS RESULT OF TELECON. INS AS FOUL PA.
