Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater wreck identified as BENDEW is located at coordinates 51 30.2 N, 1 37.894 E in the North Sea off the coast of Kent, England, near the Elbow sandbank. Historical survey data from the UK Hydrographic Office tracks the evolution of this obstruction since its initial record. Early entries noted the wreck at a depth of 7 fathoms, later amended to 6.5 fathoms in 1926. Despite various historical notations regarding its position, multiple modern hydrographic surveys have failed to locate the wreckage. Investigations conducted on January 4, 1996, using DCS3 side-scan sonar and magnetometer equipment, failed to find any trace of the obstruction. Further confirmation was provided in September 2017 when a multibeam echosounder dataset review by Gardline also yielded no evidence of the BENDEW wreck. Consequently, the wreck site is officially classified as dead or non-existent in current maritime records. Navigation charts no longer display the obstruction as a hazard, as repeated sonar surveys confirm the site is clear of debris.
