Simplified Wreck Survey
The historical underwater wreck of the BARENTSZ is located at coordinates 7° 44.825' S, 108° 59.933' E, off the southern coast of Java near Cilacap, Indonesia, in the Indian Ocean. Hydrographic survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office first logged this steam vessel in November 1947, when it was marked by a green conical buoy. Later surveys in 11/1955 identified the site as a dangerous wreck with structural features including a mast and funnel visible on Indonesian chart 108. In April 1970, notices indicated salvage operations were underway to lift the wreck. Detailed updates in 1985, 1987, and 1993 continued to chart the dangerous underwater obstruction near 07° 44' 49.5" S, 108° 59' 56" E. By April 2012, official nautical charts updated the status of the BARENTSZ to dead and removed the symbol, indicating the underwater wreck is no longer a navigation hazard.
