Simplified Wreck Survey

The historic shipwreck Alecto is located at coordinates 51 34.6 N, 2 23.5 E. Originally reported sunk in May 1937 and initially designated as a dangerous wreck with a position approximate, subsequent hydrographic surveys tell a different story. Extensive searches conducted in March 1966 by HMS Myrmidon using sonar and echosounders across a two-mile square area yielded nothing, noting an area full of shifting sand ridges. By December 1980, a survey by HMNLS Buyskes found no trace of the obstruction, leading authorities to amend the status to dead and delete it from official charts, a finding confirmed again by a Dutch survey in March 1981.
