Circumstances of loss

6.12.65 BUILT IN 1946. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY MARGUARDIA CIA NAV SA. PASSAGE PHILIPPINES FOR EUROPE. RAN AGROUND ON LUCONIA SHOALS. SHE WAS BADLY DAMAGED, HER MASTER ABANDONED ALL EFFORTS TO REFLOAT THE VESSEL AND REMOVED ALL THE CREW. HOWEVER THE OWNERS OF THE WRECKED VESSEL DECIDED TO PUT A THREE-MAN SECURITY GUARD ON BOARD. ON 6.12.65 THE VESSEL WAS BOARDED BY ABOUT 100 PIRATES IN SIX BOATS. THE GUARDS FLED TO SAFETY LEAVING THE PIRATES TO THEIR LOOTING AND STRIPPING. (MSD).
